Sun gazing is an ancient rite that existed in several cultures as Mayan, Aztec, Egyptian, Greeks, Tibetan and Indian Yoga. Today in some of them, it is still practiced.
“Sun gazing is a cost-free, guru-free practice that can free mankind from mental and physical disease and spiritual ignorance”. – Hira Ratan Manek.
Hira Ratan Manek is the man who made the rite of sun gazing reappear due to a protocol design for a safe practice. Later, he spread his protocol and experience around the world.
HRM was born on 12th of September 1937 in Bodhavad, India, was raised in Calicut, Kerala, India, where he had his Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of Kerala.
After graduation, he joined the family’s shipping and spice trading business, and continued working there until he retired in 1992.
Then, he worked on this method for 3 years, when finally he was able to re-discover the secrets of sun gazing.
During his study, he was mainly inspired from the teachings of Lord Mahavir of Jains, who was also practicing this method 2600 years ago. Other inspirations for sungazing came from ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Native Americans.
Since June 18th, 1995, HRM has lived and continues to do so, only consuming solar energy and water. Occasionally, for hospitality and social purposes, he drinks tea, coffee and buttermilk.
Until now, Hira Ratan had three strict fasting, during which he had only sun energy and water. In addition, he was under the control and observation of various science and medical teams.
The first of these fasting lasted for 211 days during 1995-96 in Calicut, India directed by Dr. C.K. Ramachandran, a medical expert on allopathy and ayurvedic medicine.
The second one, by a 411 fasting days, from 2000-2001 in Ahmedabad, India. Directed by an International team of 21 medical, doctors and scientists.
The team directed by Dr. Sudhir Shah (Dr. Shah’s synopsis report) and Dr. K. K. Shah, the acting President of Indian Medical Association at that time.
Dr. Maurie D. Pressman, MD also describes his experience with HRM in an article he wrote and later joined the team for the next observation on HRM.
Finally, after the excitement of the findings at Ahmadabad, HRM was invited to Thomas Jefferson University and University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he underwent a 130 day observation period.
This Science-Medical team wanted to observe and examine his retina, pineal gland and brain. Therefore this observation team was led by Dr. Andrew B. Newberg, a leading authority on the brain sciences and also featured in the recent movie “What the Bleep Do We Know” and Dr. George C. Brenard, the leading authority on the pineal gland.
Initial results found that the gray cells in HRM’s brain are regenerating. 700 photographs taken where the neurons reported to be active and not dying.
Furthermore, the pineal gland was expanding and not shrinking which is typically what happens after mid fifties and its maximum average size is about 6 x 6 mm, however for HRM, it has been measured to be at 8 x 11 mm.
Hira Ratan ManekThere are many other sun gazers who also achieved similar results and have volunteered to get tested. However due to lack of funding and other lifestyle restrictions there is not documentation of the results.
The uniqueness of HRM is that he surrendered his living body for observation and experiments to the scientific firmament for several extended periods of time.
Although scientists and doctors agreed that hunger reduced if not eliminated, due to the complexity of the various brain functions, they have not been able to explain how sun gazing has such positive effects on the human mind or body. However more research is underway.
From 2002 HRM begins to travel all over the world to preach about the practice of sun gazing. so that humanity can heal their problems without any cost or guru.
In 2009 HRM traveled to 80 countries in 210 days, preaching and teaching this ancient solar methodology. Each year for the last few years, HRM gives on average approximately 300 lectures on sun gazing in different languages.
Several interviews appeared in leading media and TV all over the world including the BBC World Services. Furthermore, documentaries on the HRM method of sun gazing exhibited on different worldwide channels to encourage the people’s practice.
Additionally, many videos can be found on youtube as well as numerous links to Sun gazing websites and blogs. Also via google, in different languages such as French, Spanish, English, Hindi, etc.
Sun gazing is a one-time practice of your lifetime. Usually for a period of 9 months. The practice entails looking at the rising or setting sun only during the safe hours. No harm will come to your eyes during the morning and evening safe hours. The safe hours are anytime within one hour window after sunrise or anytime within the one hour window before sunset.

Both times are good for practice, it depends on individual convenience. Sun gazing also has the spontaneous advantage of getting vitamin A and D.
Stand on bare earth with bare foot. Eyes can blink and/or flicker. Stillness or steadiness of the eyes, not required. Do not wear any lenses or glasses while sun gazing.
First day, during the safe hours, sun gaze for a maximum of 10 seconds. Second day sun gaze for 20 seconds at the rising sun adding ten seconds every succeeding day.
After a While you reached the final step of 45 minutes. Now you stop adding time to sun gazing. Its time for you begin to count backward until you get return to 5 minutes. And from that moment you will only have to gaze sun for 5 minutes a day.
Even the practice will no longer be necessary because the mere fact of walking while receiving sunlight, your body will automatically recharge like a living battery.
During the first three months, the pineal gland start activated, and the hypothalamus or pathway to the brain from the eye is getting charged.
After that period the solar energy starts reaching your brain and charging it. Same happens with each and every cell in your body. When all the cells in the body get purified there is not necessary to sun gaze any more.
At this time, sun gaze finish and you do not need to continue the practice.
Have a belief that the sun rays that you receive into your eyes are an immense benefit and will not harm you at all. This will give you earlier, quicker and better results. Even without a belief component, also you will get the results as you follow the practice, however, it will take longer time.
On the other hand, you need not restrict any of your normal daily routines to sun gaze. There are no restrictions. You can enjoy your food while applying this practice. Hunger will disappear eventually by itself, same will happens with any addiction you have.
Each person is different from another, therefore the reactions and times involved can be varied. In any case, the results will always be beneficial.
The sun energy or the sun rays passing through the human eye are charging the hypothalamus tract, which is the pathway behind the retina leading to the human brain.

We will have the self-confidence to face life problems by means of developing a positive mind set instead of a negative one. Life become easier, more comfortable and more enjoyable.
Moreover, we will become fearless since our psychosis disappeared so all the ills of the mind will finish. This is the first phase of the method and lasts around 3 months.
After 3 months of sun gazing you will develop a sense of confidence and know the answers for yourself spiritually. Physical hunger for food will also begin to lessen.
Your energy levels may increase and the benefits of having a routine in conjunction with the earth’s rhythms will begin to have a peaceful affect on your perception of the world. The circadian patterns will become regular.
There is a balance of the mind, where you are in a position to judge personal answers. Bad feelings and tensions disappear: irritability, anger, greed, envy, jealousy, fear, grief, and general personal frustrations will go away. You become a lovable creature.
Everybody likes you. You will do no wrong. If you are positive or fearless, you will not harm anybody nor pain anybody. You will become a compassionate person.
This is a great contribution to world peace. A positive approach creates solutions to problems and waste in society.
Besides, mental depression will go away. Psychiatrists observed that sadness is caused by lack of sunlight. With the practice of sungazing you will not have depression in your whole lifetime.
You will achieve a perfect balance of mind and mindfulness will begin to be habitual. Fear of death will go away. The state of mind is such that you will welcome death.
What is to happen, you will be able to let it happen. There will be no worries. Everyone has some sort of mental disorder, which is the biggest human problem. Maybe can be removed by the proper use of sunlight.
Once you reach about 35 minutes of sun gazing, physical disharmonies, injuries and diseases will be remedied. Then, the brain reaches its ability to store an energetic charge.
Eventually, even spiritual ignorance goes away.

How To Make Solar Water?
Fill a glass bottle with water and place it in direct sunlight. The longer the bottle is exposed to sunlight, the more powerful the water gets. Then, you should drink or use the water within 24 next hours.
You can also use sun charged water for topical and external health issues. As in pets and plants, as well.

As Dr. Group points out:
“Sun gazing is an interesting practice that touches the spiritual and psychological realms, which are very personal things. Everyone is wired a little differently… If you choose to partake, do yo own research, be careful, be cautious and document your experience”.
There are now Solar Healing Centers coming up all over the world and facilitating a global group of HRM Phenomenon practitioners.
For those who are interested in learning more about the sun energy is an effective healing source, HRM recommends these books:
Doctors and eye care professionals caution against looking directly at the sun. They say that it will damage the retina. However, if done correctly sun gazing at the safe hours, studies show there is not risk of damaging the eyes.
Those sun gazers for many year practicing, have had their eyes checked to show no damage. Consequently, its advised that you have your eyes checked within the first few weeks of your practice so, you can know for yourself.
